Sometimes we wonder where all the time goes. Herewith, some new pictures and a video for the amusement of all you Jasperphiles out there.
Of course he's usually a very good and quiet baby, but sometimes...well, it's bouncing bouncing bouncing.
We're managing fairly well. He's learning to sleep in bed with us, which is a big improvement over our taking turns sitting up in the rocking chair all night. Although, the overnight shift changes can be a little tough if you're roused from a deep sleep--Sarah woke Adam up at 5 the other morning to take over, and he leapt up and started looking around under the pillows, sure that Jasper had rolled under there and concerned about the fact that he couldn't find him.
This sleeping in bed turns out to be just one of our Parental Confessions, and a common one at that--in our parenting group the other day, 95% of the people said their newborn sleeps in bed with them, all with the sheepish, hangdog look of someone who has traded their vows to be perfect parents for a few extra hours of sleep each night.
We first lowered our standards when Jasper was a week old. He loves to suck, and will often try to keep nursing for a long time, even when it's clear he's no longer swallowing. We started letting him suck on our fingers sometimes to lull him to sleep, but after one particularly harrowing bout of crying late one night where he was just too worked up to sleep, we bought him a pacifier the next day. The books say you shouldn't give a pacifier til the baby is anywhere from two to four weeks old, but the ability to (occasionally) get a fussy baby to sleep with a little piece of rubber has quite a powerful effect on his parents' interest in advice from books.
Mazel Tov. Gus is adorable and so is Jasper. I want to send Gus a gift, but your phone # is required. Please email it to me.
Love, Aunt Carol
