Les Folies Diaperes, or: Four in One Blow

Today Jasper is 6 days old. He constantly amazes us with his beauty, charm, and ill-timed urination. It appears that Jasper’s johnson is attracted to the light. Every time we expose him in order to change his diaper, he showers the surrounding area with his delightfully warmed pee. The surrounding area usually includes his dad, his mom, his chest, arms, and sometimes face. (This is ironic, as just yesterday at the doctor, the pediatrician had asked if we had noticed if Jasper’s pee makes an arc. As if to demonstrate, little Jasper arcs and arcs…)

Today Jasper had a personal best, with four open-air pees in one changing session. It’s not that we’re not prepared for the fountain of youth. As a result of previous experience, we now always keep a second diaper covering his little trouser worm while we change him. But today, every time we uncovered him – even for just a second – in order to place the actual diaper – he let the golden river flow. It’s almost like he has a light-activated, laser guided penis. As soon as it was covered by the second diaper (to allow time for cleaning the mess from the previous peeing) he would stop peeing. As soon as we removed the cover to diaper him, he commenced peeing again.

This builds on yesterday's feat: Adam is changing him and he starts peeing everywhere. Adam's cleaning that up when Jasper spits up. Adam grabs a cloth and moves to his head to start cleaning that up when in his peripheral vision he sees a pool of poop steadily growing from Jasper's lower end. We expected his little ears to start oozing wax or something next.

Jasper is also quite accomplished in a number of other areas. In his first two days he lost half a pound, but by day 5 he had regained his birth weight, thanks to his vigorous eating. In fact, he is quite an accomplished eater, having mastered the art of ‘the latch.’ While one may think this is something that all babies can do, we are convinced that this is an indicator of Jasper’s innate genius.

Today we took Jasper for his first walk outside. We have an enormously complex sling which consists of 40 feet of fabric which one winds about one’s body like a bizarre orthopedic brace. Adam has become particularly accomplished at donning the sling, so for our outing, Jasper was strapped to Adam’s chest while we walked about the neighborhood. Jasper’s first passeggiata was very successful, especially by our standards, since he fell asleep! He got his first visit to our neighborhood coffee shop, and a brief tour of the nearby park where we expect he’ll be spending a lot of time as he gets older.

I think you're right about Jasper's baby genius - seems that a lot of newborns are NOT natural latcher-oners from what I glean from my friends with a 5 month old.
